A day in my life

Posted: October 10, 2009 in Essay - A day in my life

Published in “Saransh” …..   a Schneider Electric India, internal Newsletter ‘Sep 2009

What is the solution for office buildings ? ….. the question repeatedly posed to me by many in last few weeks during formal and informal meetings. I would go on explaining it to everyone, giving examples and citing customer benefits, but DSC_1258I am yet to discover a crisp and clear visual exhibit to explain the solutions for office buildings.  The question looms large and heavy on me, I feel the pressure on my body, I am not able to Push my hands up and I hear my gym instructor saying ‘ Come on ! focus, you can do it.’ But, I give up and the instructor takes the weight and places the bar back on the Bench press support. I wish, someone can help me the same way for all the big questions at my workplace, I decide to give a call to corporate solutions team in France, enquiring for ‘winning architecture’ for Office Buildings. While on treadmill the question, once again crosses my mind and I increase the speed and start jogging faster, as if, I am in race with this question. For once, I would like to believe in the principle of serendipity and stumble uponr002-001 Portrait the office solution by chance. But my mind will immediately discard any such theory of coincidence.

The earlier part of the day is fast as any Mumbaikar, probably due to the city habits when you grow up catching suburban train and don’t spend much time getting ready or’ having long breakfast and sipping tea. After returning from Gym, when I am about to leave for office after a quick bite and a glass of milk, one quick glance at my father assures me that, there is no bad news on TV Channels. City  is safe today, no terror attacks, no political party has declared to halt the city, or no religious procession.  If there was anything my father would have passed a comment. He is either reading Newspapers ‘or making notes for another trading day on Stock market portal. My wife, Roopal is not working since the time, we were blessed with a son, Dheemaan, who is now five year old. In the morning, she is busy with Dheemaan to get him ready for school, when my mother gives her a helping hand.

Drive from home to office is quite short but with traffic at its peak, gives me four or five tracks on FM radio. After managing the Parking for my car  I boot my computer and log in. On the day, when parking is full, one has to use all the skills with the building security person to secure parking and the TAJunwritten sales fundas’ of convince, confuse or corrupt comes in to play. After, I have replied all the short mails and the complex ones parked in ‘mails pending‘ folder, I sense my self waiting for an ‘instant message’ from one of the colleagues inviting me for a coffee break. I look at coffee breaks with colleagues as an opportunity to learn other business issues and share my issues to get their perspectives. The present assignment of ‘Strategic Accounts RK& Solution sales’ gives me huge opportunity to collaborate with cross BU organizations like BMS, Power, ISC, CPCS and PEC. It also throws a big challenge to get other BU’s attention for my priority.  But, in a very strong way I can relate myself contributing to the transformation journey of our organization, while I canvass the ‘new way’ of selling products and solutions. In this mission, I spend time engaging my colleagues on ‘common projects’, showcasing sales teams the benefits  during the joint sales visit to the customers, coordinating Tenders with PEC or with preferred contractors, preparing End User presentations and prescription tactics. I have realized that there is no typical day at Schneider Electric in my last eleven years of working here, days are always different from Monday to Friday, meeting customers, preparing for customer visits, following up with list of actions after customer visits, internal meetings, travelling different regions to explore opportunities, conversing on phone with different colleagues and googling to find answers to any question in life. ISL

Friday, Mumbai office is always buzzing with smartly dressed week-end enthusiasts, cappuccino consumption at its peak. On Friday evening, I get the Cricket kit loaded in my car trunk, looking forward to one more Sunday morning of Cricket with some of the office colleagues at the ‘Nets’. Unless I am working late ‘or meeting customer over dinner, my evening plans are decided by my wife or friends, where I have absolutely no control. I am told the plans and I follow, let it be going out for dinner ‘or visiting my brother’s place ‘or taking my son to Joggers Park / shopping mall ‘or simply stay at home and play games with my son ‘or most obvious of all – surf TV channels. My father is found teaching Chess to my son or chatting with relatives in US/UK. Often, he will come up to me for solution to his computer problems and I solve it with an ease of an expert. On the contrary to this situation, I feel out of words to answer the questions of my five year old, whose inquisitiveness leaves me puzzled before I hibernate.
